This is a comic which has not changed much from the first time I drew it back in 2002. It's always featured the three different kinds of hikers (in fact, the blurbs about each type were lifted almost verbatum from the original comic sketch). The only thing that has changed is which type is represented by which character--when I first did the comic, I didn't have a character for my brother Clif, so I just used Jerome in his place. It didn't work well--Jerome is a slacker and an indoors sort of person, and I had him all gung-ho about hiking and being in the national park for the summer. It didn't fit his personality. He also wouldn't have been a hiking zealot, as he was in the first version of this comic. The original beginner-level hiker was Wolfgang, which probably still holds true. Also, the original comic ran backwards to this one--the zealot appeared first, then the intermediate hiker, then the beginner. It works better this way, I think.
